This series of 13 short lessons will teach Coaches and Athletes how to obtain the necessary skills in the simplest way possible.
Each lesson stands on its own but is much more effective if taken in order. As needed, please redo lessons as applicable to a particular athlete or crew. Each lesson starting from skill 3 is designed for completion on the water, and all are in a similar format with a short video detailing the lesson for the session, a pdf document to take with you when coaching and some further viewing relevant to the particular lesson if you want more information. Lessons 1 and 2 contains information that is needed before starting to row on the water. The best way to use this resource is to have the coaches view the video before the session, review the relevant pdf document and discuss with each other so that all coaches share a common purpose. Then commence the training session and only focus on the selected skill with the crew that they are coaching, providing the best improvement for the crew in the shortest timeframe. For an demonstration of the rowing stroke on water please view Rowing Stroke in Motion and we suggest download the poster (click here) and put it on the wall of the club for the athletes to view. In subsequent sessions move onto the next skill in the series unless you feel it necessary to revisit one of the earlier skills. When using this method, you will find that people who have not coached rowing before will be able to coach very effectively in each session. If you have senior rowers, masters or parents that are willing to assist this series will give them the confidence to coach and at a competent level. The easiest way to learn the basics of rowing is to practice on the rowing machine; please see our 5 part skill series on Rowing on an Ergo Posture, Catch, Finish, Catch Connection and Rhythm. Once these techniques have been mastered the transition to on water rowing will be much easier. |
