Rowing with your feet out on an ergo or in a boat is a really good technique to make sure that you have got the right posture. For example, if I have my feet out, they are not tied in. Then if I row without controlling my posture what will happen is I get to the end of the rowing stroke and I tend to lose connection with the plate in fact I've seen people in a boat actually fall over into the back of the boat or into the front of the boat.
The importance of it is it's important to be able to row with your feet out. The way to do it is to make sure that you have got your core turned on and you've got the right posture at the finish. But if I find that I have really poor posture then it's harder for me to control that finish so it's important to be sitting tall, point your toes and hold yourself in that strong position at the finish. You'll find that you row better if you row with your feet out for a small period during each training session. So on an ergo in a boat, I suggest row for part of the time with your feet out and try and get so you are comfortable in rowing in that way if you are then you are likely to have a better rowing stroke.
