In this video, Ken runs through the process he uses to determine which rigging changes are necessary with his crews. He discusses how to decide what gate and feet height changes are required.

A really easy way to work out whether athlete's in the right position from a height perspective in the boat is to just take a little bit of film you only need a couple of strokes and then have a look at the film and work out what you want to change in order to get there rowing the right way it's interesting if you try and do it in a static position so you just have them sitting in the boat and ask them to come to the catch then you won't necessarily get the same position that they're going to get when they're actually rowing because being a dynamic movement you'll find sometimes they'll go further forward and sometimes i'll go less so what we're looking for in particular here is two things the first one is the shin angle at the catch to see whether we ought to change either drop the foot stretch or lift it or give them a seat pad in order to get there so it's easy for them to get to the catch without difficulty secondly we want to look at is the handle height at the finish so that'll determine whether we want to drop the rigger a little bit or lift the seat back of course these things interact with each other so it's important to make sure that that you adjust the the best one first ideally if you can have no seat pad it's better because no seat pad gives a better connection to the boat so if we
so coming into the into the catch position here
so we can see here if we go from the bow the bow person is very much over vertical and so what we can do is in this particular case i'd suggest initially we'd lift the feet and i'd probably suggest i'd lift them about a centimeter and a half so if we go with bow
and then if we look at the two-person i'd probably go up about a centimeter same issue we've got shins are very over vertical not as much as bow but but still a little bit too much with three i'd suggest we'd want to drop our feet perhaps a centimeter
because it would be nice if she had a little bit a little bit more but not much just just close and with the stroke person we'd again want to drop a feet if we can probably about a centimeter
and then if we go through to the finish
if we look at where they're finishing the stroke person we ignore in this case because she's out of the water already but if we look at the others then in this particular in the three-seat I'd suggest blades out of the water there and the handle if that blade was in the water then the height is going to be up about here so I suggest we try and drop the gate a centimeter
which will give it a much more it'll be easier for it to hold the blade in the water at the finish with the person in two seat we've got about the same sort of problem so i'd probably go a centimeter down of course we make the changes and then we go in the water and check it and see how yeah see how comfy they feel and with the bow person that's quite a lot if we look at that blade is buried in the water there where that handle height is going to have to come through in order to finish off correctly and it's going to be too high this one the blade's not quite buried it's not quite so bad this one the blade's not buried so it's not so bad so the bow person i'd probably suggest that we want to try and gain two centimeters somehow with a combination of rigger by dropping the gate or lifting the seat if we lift the seat though remember this is the bow person we wanted to actually lift their feet anyway because they're too far over so if we leave the feet the same and lift the seat we're going to get more over at the catch which is one yeah if we look at the stroke person we can see at this point here the blades are pretty well still buried and it's going to have to come through there so there's probably two centimeters there if we want to drop it interesting all of them are probably too high and so now what i suggest you do is we take our list and go ahead and change the rig and then we go in the water again and we'll see how film it again
