Place then push in rowing - How to teach
Timing the catch is essential. When you place the blade before you push it allows the oar to connect with the water.
In this video, Ken shows how you can teach rowers to develop this feeling. Push too early you will waste your leg drive and spin your wheels, push too late you'll slow the boat through pressure on the foot stretcher and "miss " the catch. |

putting the blade into the water and making sure that you don't push before it's well connected is a bit of a skill some athletes can put the blade in before they drive but you'll find that many athletes put the blade in as they drive the difference is significant so let's have a look and see how we can fix this on a Swingulater
so let's have a close look here you can see here mel on the swingulater and we've put some tape on a body and some tape on the swingulater itself to mark movement so you can see quite clearly the movement of the body in relation to the boat so you can see here as the blade goes into the water or the swingulater roller hits the plate then there's no movement of the body and then as she starts to push
then you can see the well connected right from the beginning
here we have mel demonstrating though putting the blade in as you push so let's watch the same parts the body against the machine and the wheel you can see here there's significant movement of the leg drive before the blade the wheel hits the water
very important that we try to minimize this however what actually happens in the boat is different from the swingulater in the swingulater it's easy to put the blade in the water so to speak before the leg drive because there's no movement of the boat however what we need to do is to educate athletes that the blade goes into the water and they have to let themselves move a little so here we demonstrate showing mel moving down the seat being pushed by me so here's ken pushing on the oar and pushing the blade towards the stern of the boat and asking the athlete to not push it all to just sit there and allow themselves to be pushed down the slide this gives them an understanding of what it feels like when the blade hits the water what they need to do is the blade hits the water they lift their hands the blade hits the water they need to allow the blade to push them down the slide a little bit until they connected and then they can have their leg drive take place so here we demonstrate a method of teaching athletes on the swingulater ergo how to actually learn to wait for this sensation i suggest do it with their eyes closed so they can imagine they're in the boat and you'll find you get really quick understanding from the athletes that they have to wait for the blade to be connected before they push and then this time when when you hear it go clump i want you to then start to push
do it again start coming to the front here at the front and then i'll put it in and then you when it's in you push and having the eyes closed then you're not distracted and you're just feeling imagine you're in a boat
so all I'm doing is holding the holding the blade and then as i push it down into the water and go that way a little bit to simulate the boat moving and the athlete just needs to make sure that they don't move
as you're looking from the side with the tapes here and the tape on the athlete's body you can just even move that little bit but make sure that the athlete's got their eyes closed and as soon as they feel it going up they know it's coming you push them a bit and they push it if they take it away from you
you can tell immediately that they started to push too early
