the most difficult thing we find with athletes rowing on an ergo is that they try to open up their body first
so if you just demonstrate opening your body there jess with the handle yep so so they tend to open their body too early let's exaggerate it so come into the catch and open it just
so you can see that we don't want to do that what we want to do is we want to have our body in that same catch position whilst we push down the slide about three quarters of the way so let's get rid of the handle again easy to practice this without the handle and so ask the athlete to come down the slide until you get to about where you think a little bit further forward a little bit further forward about there a little bit back okay but there's where i want the athlete to start to open up so if you're now coming to the catch again you put your body in the catch position so you hold your body a bit more angle there now when jess pushes back ask the athlete to just push back without moving their body at all until they hit the foot and stop okay go into the catch again come back again and do that a couple of times you'll find that it's very easy for them then get a an understanding of how long we want to hold the body in that catch position before we open up because it's just about that patterning you get used to knowing that spot because because it is pretty it is most of the way down like it's a long way a long way it's a really long way you see this kid where you can say what's that feeling you gotta hold it for a long time yeah yeah and then that's why it's such a core heavy sport because you do need to hold hold hold hold pull and then yeah and then once you finally go it's still core core core core core core all right i can relax for just a little bit and now we go again
