Rowing Angles - Catch, finish and total arc
In this video, Ken discusses the arc of the rowing stroke, measuring both the catch and finish angles. Somewhere between 100-110 degrees of total arc is a good target for racing when sculling and between 90 and 95 degrees when sweeping.
Every athlete has a different arm and leg length, different trunk length and different flexibility. It is therefore essential to rig the boat in a way that fits the rower.
The last thing you want is one rower in a crew rowing a 90-degree arc and another rowing 110 degrees. Ideally, each rower in a crew should have a similar catch and finish angle.
Ken shows how a small movement of the foot stretcher affects catch and finish angles. He did the annotation with the Coach's Eye app for Ipad.
